Vale turns waste into revenue as iron ore saps profit
With the golden years of iron ore long gone, Vale SA is looking at every opportunity to make some cash. Selling its waste is one of them.
The Rio de Janeiro-based mining giant has made 350 million reais ($114 million) in four years from selling used lubricants, rubber from conveyor belts, scrap metal, old tires and other recyclables. The sales are generating enough income to cover Vale’s waste management costs in Brazil, said Marcio Valente, the miner’s global manager of sustainable waste disposal.
“We need to see every segment as a big opportunity to lever the company’s final result as a whole,” Valente said in a telephone interview from Rio.'
The world’s largest iron-ore and nickel producer is under pressure to cut costs, boost productivity and sell assets as it’s forecast to post its lowest annual earnings excluding items in a decade.
Before the program, disposing of recyclable materials such as 50,000 metric tons of rubber from conveyor belts was a major expense, Valente said.
"We had a big cost in the past with these types of belts, and nowadays we transformed that into revenue,” he said. “We get big results where you least expect it.”
Vale last year made 83 million reais from the sale of waste, 76 percent of which ended up being recycled, Valente said. The company expects to generate similar revenue with the strategy this year, he said.
