Great Lakes iron ore shipments improve over 2009

Iron ore tonnage numbers for Minnesota and Wisconsin ports, both during September and for the year to date, were higher this year than last.

Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled nearly 5.3 million net tons in September, a 69 percent improvement over a year ago, according to the Lake Carrier’s Association.

Despite the improvement, however, loadings were 7.5 percent below the month’s five-year average.

Through September, 39 million tons of iron ore have been shipped on the Great Lakes, a 102 percent increase compared to the same period in 2009 and less than 2 percent under the five-year average.

The Lake Carriers’ Association represents 18 American companies that operate 55 U.S.-flag vessels on the Great Lakes.
