According to Zamin executive Martin Kannengieser, the company’s BML project – Bahia Mineração Ltda – is estimated to have 2.5bn tonnes of high-grade iron ore resources. A 20m tonnes/year plant might be put into operation in September 2012; in a latter stage, it might be increased to 25-26m t/y.
BML has concluded pre-feasibility studies and been awarded an environmental license to begin operations. Moreover, the Brazilian government is constructing a rail system connecting the mine to the coast city Ilheus to transport BML’s pellet feed.
With an investment of about US$2bn, the BLM project is aimed at meeting Chinese and Middle Eastern market demand.
Additionally, Zamin is developing a minor project called Gray Stone in Bahia state, which is planned to produce over 6m tonnes of pellet feed per year. Pre-feasibility studies are underway; however, a timeframe isn’t available yet.
Zamin is also developing an iron ore project in Uruguay, which includes a slurry pipe and an estimated deposit of 2bn t/y. Currently, the project is under pre-feasibilities studies, which are expected to be concluded in the first half of 2011.
