Aurox jumped as much as 152 percent to 68 cents in Sydney trading after Perth-based Atlas offered one of its shares for every three of Aurox. The bid values Aurox stock at 73.67 cents each compared with its closing price of 27 cents when last traded March 5.

Iron ore producers, such as Vale SA and BHP Billiton Ltd., may win higher prices in 2010 as global steel output recovers. Buying Aurox gives Atlas the Balla Balla magnetite project in Western Australia and as much as 12 million tons a year in port capacity at Port Hedland, Atlas said.

“It is all about resource quality, infrastructure access and economies of scale,” Atlas Iron Managing Director David Flanagan said in a statement to the Australian stock exchange.

Aurox shares traded at 64 cents at 11:18 a.m. local time, the highest since August 8, 2008. Atlas shares declined 3.1 percent to A$2.14.

Aurox’s board unanimously recommended the offer, Atlas said. Atlas produces iron ore from the Pardoo project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. It’s also developing the Wodgina and Abydos projects and is targeting output of 6 million tons this year.
